Asus AT3IONT-I + Mythbuntu crashes with TBS6981

Asus AT3IONT-I + Mythbuntu crashes with TBS6981

Postby AlextheCamel » Wed May 18, 2011 10:29 am

Having no luck with TBS6981 and the AT3IONT-I everything loads fine but the system crashes after watching T.V for a minutes or two. If I remove the TBS6981 and watch web tv etc everything is fine. I even ordered another TBS6981 in case mine was crook.
Any help on this would be much appreciated.

Possibly Solved!
I need to do more testing but so far it looks like the problem may simply have been the CPU overheating. This board is passively cooled but it seems that once you start watching T.V the processor is working hard enough to overheat. I have fitted a fan and so far no lock ups. Will post back if there is further trouble.

Still having problems.

A lot of the trouble was definitely overheating. However I still have crashes... just less frequently. There are basically two problems.

1. System will lockup after watching live T.V for a period of time
2. System will not lock on to a channel and shows no signal. If the system is restarted chances are it will work O.K second time around.

While heat was definitely an issue its no longer a factor as while testing I am running it with no top on the case and a case fan set on high sitting right on top of the heat sink. The heat sink dosn't even make it to blood temperature even when the CPU is under full load.

The RAM in the system is exactly what Kingston recommended for this board and its running 4GB.

I have tried another power supply but have the same result. I am running a 350 Watt Power supply so there is no lack of juice to the card and the card is hooked up with a dedicated 6 pin connector.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated. System is Mythbuntu 10.10.

OK - see if you can find any errors in the /var/log/syslog - that relate to just before the "lockup" that gives any clues (post here if you like).
When you say dedicated 6 pin connector, so you mean a 4 pin and you're using one of the 3 extra power lines that the TB6981 sometimes needs?
(My understanding is that this might only be needed if you are running lots of switches/rotators etc on your satellite - and therefore, if you have a standard (say SKY dish) then it's highly unlikely you'll need extra power to the 6981). Either way - test it with and without power.

To confirm the RAM, you could run Memtest : it should be in the grub menu on bootup.. (hold shift at boot time if Grub doesn't display itself).

Try something else CPU intensive to see if it'll lock up the machine. Maybe some DVD::RIP work, and/or watching a BDrip file?

My "gut" feeling is that it's something to do with the machine, rather than the card.. but now big reason for that.

1) try adding a fan onto the CPU HSF - even if it's temporary, then it will prove one way or the other if it is heat related.
2) is this when the pc comes out of standby/sleep? alot of tv cards use the v4l framework, and that doesnt appear to like resuming from sleep states (other than full restarts/startups). unloading your TV card drivers via 'modprobe -r' before sleep, and then modprobing them on resume fixes it.
