How do I configure the remote control?

Using it with MythTV.
I would like to know how to configure the remote control - so far I have not been able to find any useful information on the internet or with the included "documentation".
I have tried installing lirc and lirc-modules-source using apt-get and have also tried installing lirc-0.9 from source but have not had any success.
Firstly, does the included remote control work with Linux? If it does, what drivers to I need to get it working?
