xbmc not starting with network

I accessed the boot menu from the Tbs splash screen, set up wlan0 successfully. Now Matrix gets passed the splash screen but won't start xbmc. I have to perform hard shutdown via power button. No change after a few tries. Same behavior with eth0 plugged in.
If I try to setup eth0 while unplugged (force an error), then xbmc can start again, but no IP in system information. I plug in eth0 and finally get an IP.
Any idea why xbmc doesn't start with networking? What should I do to fix this?
